Exploring Identity Through Architecture: HDS Architects’ Concept Journey for the Hope Dental Centre, Rwanda
HDS Architects is proud to reflect on one of the most inspiring concept journeys our team has undertaken – the international design competition for the Hope Dental Centre in Rwanda. This project invited us not only to push our creative boundaries, but to deeply engage with questions of place, culture, materiality and identity within a region rich in history and diversity.
From the outset, our ambition was to craft a concept rooted in Rwanda’s landscape and its people. Central to this was our exploration of rammed earth construction, using soils gathered from across the country’s dramatically varied regions. Rwanda’s geography is often described as a land of a thousand hills, but its character is shaped equally by its mountains, plateaus, wetlands and bustling urban environments. By layering earth from different regions — the high-altitude volcanic mountains, the warm eastern lowlands, the fertile central plateau, the lakeside wetlands and the vibrant urban districts — the building would physically embody the nation’s diverse terrains.

This approach allowed the architecture to become a living tapestry, where each band of colour and texture represented a chapter of Rwanda’s story. The building wouldn’t just sit in its context; it would express it, celebrate it, and invite visitors and patients to engage with the landscape in a meaningful, tactile way.
But beyond its material exploration, the concept was also an important statement about community, sustainability and cultural continuity. Rammed earth offers significant environmental benefits — low embodied carbon, local material sourcing and responsible construction methods — aligning strongly with Rwanda’s forward-thinking approach to sustainability. At the same time, the design emphasised community uplift, creating a welcoming, resilient and human-centred environment for both patients and staff.
For us at HDS Architects, the Hope Dental Centre was more than a competition entry. It was an opportunity to explore how architecture can deepen connections, honour identity, and elevate the local narrative through thoughtful design. This project reaffirmed our belief that buildings can do more than provide shelter — they can inspire, educate, and unite.
We remain incredibly proud of the ideas developed for this concept and the creative journey it took our team on. It stands as a testament to the power of architecture to tell stories that matter.
