First Steps Nursery

New Modular Nursery Delivered at Conquest Hospital to Support NHS Workforce

We are proud to have contributed to the delivery of a new purpose-built nursery at Conquest Hospital, part of East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, helping to provide tangible support to their dedicated staff and their families.

Delivered back in January 2022, this modern facility offers 56 childcare places for children aged between four months and eight years, enabling hospital staff to access high-quality, convenient childcare close to their workplace. This not only provides peace of mind for NHS employees but also supports staff recruitment, retention and overall wellbeing—particularly important within the demanding healthcare sector.

A Modern Build Using Modular and Offsite Construction

The nursery was constructed using the innovative Streif Modular System, a Structural Insulated Panel (SIP) solution manufactured in Germany. The system provides a highly efficient method of construction, with the structural frame, shell and roof elements fabricated offsite to exceptional quality standards.

These components were delivered to site ready for assembly, significantly reducing onsite construction time. This approach is especially beneficial within a live hospital environment, where minimising disruption, noise and vehicle movements is essential.

Seamless Delivery and Collaboration

The project was successfully coordinated and delivered by Cheesmur Building Contractors, acting as Principal Contractor. Their expertise ensured precise planning, site management and seamless collaboration with design teams and suppliers throughout every phase of the build.

Through this collaborative effort, the project team delivered a safe, welcoming and energy-efficient childcare environment tailored to meet the needs of hospital staff and their families.

Why Modular and Offsite Construction Works for Healthcare Settings

  • Reduced on-site disruption – Less construction traffic, noise and site activity, ideal for sensitive hospital locations.
  • Faster delivery and installation – With much of the building fabricated offsite, time on site is minimised.
  • High-quality construction – Factory-controlled manufacturing ensures consistency, airtightness and energy efficiency.
  • Sustainable solution – Lower waste generation, improved thermal performance and reduced carbon during construction.

Looking Ahead

This project highlights how modern construction methods can deliver meaningful social value by supporting the people who care for our communities. Providing reliable, on-site childcare enables NHS staff to better balance work and family life—an essential factor in staff wellbeing and service resilience.

If you’re interested in how Modular and Offsite Construction could be applied to your next project, we’d be delighted to discuss the possibilities.
